When Should I Change My Engine’s Filters?

Help spread the word by letting other Entegra Motorhome owners know about us! The ISX platform had only one liter option, the X series offers two: The fuel-friendly X15 "Efficiency" Series geared toward line-haul and regional markets, and the X15 "Performance" Series, built specifically for heavy-haul, RV and other demanding applications.

Several hardware changes were made to improve performance on the X15 engine, including a high-flow EGR cooler and piston cooling nozzles and exhaust valves to improve reliability. The X15 Performance Series now boasts horsepower in its top model. That is right 5 more HP for Cornerstones!

Increased braking power has been made available through out the full operating speed of the engine, especially from 1, to 1, rpm, right where you need it the most. So now you will get more engine braking at normal driving rpms. They have also introduced the Single Module aftertreatment system with the X series.

This saves up to 60 percent space and 40 percent less weight than the previous aftertreatment system. Improvements to the DEF doser will provide an improved spray pattern to reduce DEF consumption, how much will be interesting find out as the ISX15's consumption can be rather healthy.

The oil change, oil filter and fuel filter service intervals have increased. Cummins rates oil change intervals for RV's at 15, miles or 12 months. Fuel Filter change interval is 15, mi or every 6 months. Typical RVers will have to change based on time vs miles so you may not see any benefits here. Cummins X15 for Motorhomes - - novForum Rules. The owner's manual gives two oil change intervals, depending on usage: 5, miles and 15, miles. It says to use the 5, mile interval if you make many short trips without bringing the engine up to temperature, if you operate in dusty environments, if you idle a lot something like more than ten minutes out of each hourand if you regularly operate above a certain RPM like red-lining the truck for racing, I suppose.

So, fine, I think. Even on a fifteen minute trip to the grocery store, the truck hits operating temperature. I never idle. Don't race. Don't live in the desert. I'll use the 15, mile interval. But then I got confused, because the manual says that "most operators will fit into the 5, mile category," which makes no sense to me. Assuming the truck hits operating temp even on relatively short drives, do most drivers idle their trucks all the time, or red-line them a lot? I don't think so. Seems like I'm missing something.

Diesels aren't the best for the short trip stuff, for that an electric golf cart is better. I say trust but verify. The right time to change your air filter greatly depends on the frequency and conditions in which you typically drive. Dusty, unpaved roads will clog up an air filter faster than normal highway driving where there is less airborne debris. OEM recommendations for changing the air filter vary greatly, ranging from every 16, to 24, kilometers, even to 48, kilometers in some cases. Again, this service interval depends on where and how often you drive and may not be the same number every time.

Air filters actually become more efficient at removing dust over time, right up until the point of terminal restriction wherein the filter has become too plugged to allow the engine the amount of airflow required for normal operation.

Driving around with a plugged air filter can cause the engine to work harder, leading to decreased engine performance and fuel economy. So, a filter that looks dirty upon visual inspection may in fact have plenty of life remaining before needing to be changed.

This device measures the level of flow restriction across the air filter, which provides a good indication of the remaining life of the filter. This will help ensure that the system is functioning properly and there are no other related air intake problems that can cause damage to your engine. Remember—as little as one gram of dust is enough to cause engine failure. Unlike air filters, fuel filters become increasingly restricted as they carry out their job of removing contamination from diesel fuel.

Where operating environment is typically the limiting factor for air filters, fuel cleanliness is the limiting factor for fuel filters. In other words, the dirtier the fuel source, the quicker the fuel filter will plug. There are three main categories when talking about types of diesel fuel contaminant. The first type is classified as organic contaminants. These particles are usually residual by-products of the fuel refining process and are formed over time due to temperature changes and water in the fuel tank; as this occurs, a thick, black substance forms and will quickly plug fuel filters.

These are called asphaltenes.

On the other end of the spectrum, cold temperatures can also cause the formation of fuel gelling and paraffin wax. These conditions can lead to blockage of screens, hoses and especially filters. The next type of fuel contamination is considered inorganic.

These particles typically appear as dirt, sediment, wear metals, and other materials not natural to the fuel itself. While these sometimes result from fuel-system components wearing over time, most are introduced to the system through transport and storage of fuel, which are prime chances for debris and particles to fall in.Two recent changes are expected to further help owner operators increase profits, while Cummins extends its leadership position.

First, owner-operators with Cummins ISX15 engine powering their vehicle will see increased uptime and productivity due to a decreased need for ash cleaning in the Diesel Particulate Filter DPF. Cummins achieved this industry-leading extended interval through design enhancements that reduce oil consumption and ash accumulation. Encore Xtra is available to first owners, providing greater peace of mind and control over maintenance costs.

This change will be greatly embraced by owner-operators, who typically run longer trade cycles than fleets. These new offerings — in combination with Cummins industry-leading fuel economy, resale value and service support — are expected to provide customers with a lower TCO and bolster Cummins position as the market share leader in the heavy duty transportation sector. With emissions standards for over-the-road truck engines becoming more stringent every year, meeting the ever-changing regulations forces diesel engine manufacturers to push the technology envelope even further. The complicated emissions systems employed by engine makers compromise fuel economy and power in order to meet the restrictive tailpipe regulations.

Instead, engine developers worked from the perspective that all the systems and components should be engineered and refined to complement each other. To accomplish this, the engineers retained the best attributes of the ISX15, and then made the improvements and refinements that allow the engine to achieve the greater fuel economy, power output, and durability they desired.

The all-new Cummins X15 turbodiesel engine is the result of those innovations.

The X15 features a new, optimized cam profile that minimizes parasitic loss during combustion and increases thermal efficiency. The piston design handles the higher compression and reduces heat transfer from combustion to the engine oil. The X15 also features a variable-geometry turbocharger with a stronger actuator and a redesigned impeller that provides rapid boost and improved engine braking up to brake horsepower at 2, rpm. Steel plungers and a diamond-like coating on the roller tappets of the injectors are used for greater durability.

The X15 is available in two different configurations: Performance and Efficiency. Each series is designed to fill a niche in the truck-engine market. The Performance-series engine has a power range of to hp, with 2, lb-ft of torque. It is well suited for heavy-haul, vocational, and emergency vehicles. On the other hand, the Efficiency Series, with its to hp and 1, lb-ft of torque, is better for meeting the needs of regional-haul and line-haul applications for which greater fuel mileage is important.

Eliminating as much drag as possible frees up power. So, to lessen the amount of drag, a low-friction water pump, geartrain, oiling system, pistons, and exhaust gas recirculation EGR are employed on the X Of course, Cummins would never release any of its technology without performing extensive tests first. So, before the X15 went into full production, more than 9 million miles of field testing all of them logged in real-world driving situations were performed on the new engine, with every component being thoroughly scrutinized before the powerplant received its final approval.

Cummins also announced a partnership with Valvoline for the Valvoline Premium Blue program that allows oil drain intervals up to 60, miles for X15 engines, 10, miles more than other API CK-4 oils.

In addition, Cummins introduced Connected Software Updates, allowing over-the-air programming of X15 engines to improve fleet management and enhance engine performance.
